The list of stars enrolled for the Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial is getting longer! The European record holder Jakob Ingebrigtsen is due to participate in the 1500 metre race. The Norwegian star took double gold in Istanbul last weekend, winning both 1500 and 3000 metres at the European Indoor Championships. He has a bigger dream now – one of setting an outdoor world record, as he already holds an indoor mark. The Polish stop on the Diamond League tour is scheduled in the Silesian Stadium on 16 July. Tickets are available at discounted price on Tuesday only.
As soon as the Diamond League authorities granted the Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial a permanent place on the calendar, the pole vault world record holder Armand Duplantis agreed to come back to Poland. Last year, he cleared 6.10 in the Silesian Stadium and was delighted with the reception from the audience. His recommendation became known to the global athletics community. There were similar opinions coming from other champions who had the opportunity to see the event first hand.
- Another star competing in front of the crowd in the Silesian Stadium on 16 July is Jakob Ingebrigtsen – confirmed the meeting director Piotr Małachowski.
The Norwegian star will compete at his favoured distance of 1500 metres, the event in which he took the Olympic gold in Tokyo with a European record of 3:28.32. That performance put him eighth on the all-time list, but the 23-year old has bigger aspirations.
- We have heard on multiple occasions of his dream to set a world outdoor record. The current mark is an old one, set 25 years ago. Jakob is just over two seconds away from Hicham El Guerrouj's record (3:26.00). Today, the more proper question is not whether he can do it, but when it will happen – Małachowski said of Ingebrigtsen.
The middle-distance star is taking the pre-Olympic season seriously, as evidenced by his exploits in Istanbul. At the recent European Indoor Championships, Ingebrigtsen ended up with two gold medals. Ahead of the World Championships in Budapest, scheduled in August, he is picking his competitions carefully. The race in Silesia will be a key test before his trip to Hungary.
